Almost had an alliteration right there if it weren’t for the fact that tuna starts with “T”! Shame. Anyways, since I’m in the middle of revising for exams, I don’t have much time to talk, but I didn’t want you guys to think I had forgotten about you! So today I present to you a super simple but super delicious recipe for tuna salad. Since I’ve been spending most of my days with my face buried in textbooks, a lot of my meals have been quite simple like this. But simple doesn’t have to mean boring or bland!
This tuna salad is sneaky because you would never know that there are two entire cans of sardines in it! Sardines are a pretty polarizing food: ya either hate ’em or ya love ’em. I actually really like them, but they don’t always sound appetizing. So if you’re not a fan of sardines, this is a great recipe for you.
Sardines are a nutritional powerhouse. They’re packed with omega 3’s, they’re super low in mercury and toxins since they are low on the food chain, and they’re an incredible source of vitamins and minerals (I’m talkin’ over 100% of your daily B12 intake, and 63% of your Vitamin D which is extremely rare to come by in foods). So it goes without saying that each and every one of you should start eating sardines if you don’t already
The key to a good tuna salad is the mayo. REAL. MAYO. So make your own. If you think you don’t like mayo, making your own will probably change the way you feel about it. It’s essentially just eggs and olive oil, super easy to make and way tastier than store-bought. If you have an immersion blender, it takes about 0.2 seconds to make. So no excuses!

- 2 cans of tuna
- 2 cans of sardines packed in olive oil (drained)
- 1 Tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp dijon or whole grain mustard
- 2-3 tsp lemon juice (to taste)
- ¼ cup homemade mayo
- salt and pepper (to taste)
- optional: 2 Tbsp finely chopped red onion
- optional: ¼ cup finely chopped celery
- In a large bowl, mash and combine the tuna and sardines.
- Thoroughly mix in the dill, garlic powder, mustard and lemon juice.
- Fold in the mayo, then season with salt and pepper to taste.
